OFF COLOUR | GOLDEN BOY PRESS INTERVIEW #362

Could you introduce yourself?

Hey, we’re Off Colour, singer/songwriter duo from Milton Keynes!

How did you two meet, what's the story?

Funny one this - so we both went to the same secondary school, however we didn’t actually become friends until Year 9. Basically, for 2 years we didn't ever cross paths due to James being at the ‘rock n roll/skateboarding/long hair don't care’ end of the spectrum and Me (Antonio) being at the ‘sporty/academic/short hair do care’ end of the spectrum. Anyway, to cut a long story short, one day James befriended someone who was within our group and introduced us to James. On his introduction to the group, he invited us all to his house for pre-drinks before heading to a party. Our initial thoughts were “Good shout, lets give this guy a chance”. Anyway, fast forward to the pre-drinks - I spot he’s got a guitar and ask if he can play. Turns out he could (wasn't just for decoration) and he could play really well. So a few weeks later I thought “Hey, why not do a cover of a song, film it and put it on YouTube?”. So we did just that, with the song in question being ’Usher - OMG” (Not his best song lets be honest but hey). So we recorded the cover and posted it online, hoping for 100 views MAX, however to our surprise the video somehow accumulated over 1,000 views in one night which was amazing. Things kind of snowballed from there, and before long we had people requesting more and more covers, then people asking for original songs and asking us to do live shows. I guess it was at at this point we realised that doing music was pretty cool and we enjoying it so much that we decided to pursue it as a career. So yeah, that’s LOOSELY how we’ve ended up where we are! Its a very long story so I’ve tried to shorten it as much as I can…

What’s your life philosophy? How do you try to apply that to your work?

As the great Dory said, “Just keep swimming” - Our latest single “Bring Me Down” literally adopts that philosophy.

Could you tell us what you think makes you stand apart in the music industry?

Well, there's two of us? There aren’t many all male singing duos out there at the moment are there? At least we don’t think there are…

How would you describe your music style? Do you feel like it reflects you?

Good question. Somebody once described us as Paolo Nutini-esque with a twist of Ed Sheeran which is a pretty flattering comparison. However, for our EP ‘Aureolin’ we wanted to get across our fun side, so the music definitely reflects that.

What are a few tips for other artists that might be reading this?

Never ever give up. Seriously. You never know what might be waiting for you around the corner. You are always one song away from wherever you want to be in your career, whether that be topping the charts or even just selling out your local pub - you are always one song away from achieving something. So just keep writing and performing, and always believe in yourself!

Could you tell us about your latest single, "Bring Me Down"? What's the story behind the work?

The song does exactly what it says on the tin - “Nothing’s going to bring me down”. We were in the studio, we had no sugar left, it was raining and we were just feeling all glum. We were both struggling with the last line of a verse we were writing when suddenly James picked up his guitar and started playing this really upbeat, fun chord progression. It was weird, like we both had the same thought at the same time, and the before we knew it we’d written a verse, pre-chorus and chorus for this new song about not letting the little things bring you down. I think that’s what we love most about the song, how organic the writing process was, and how naturally the song came about.

What's one thing that has to do with art that others might not know about you?

James does all of our artwork using Microsoft Paint!

Do you have any rituals you do before you start your creative process for a new project, to get your mind and energy in the right place?

Not particularly. A cup of tea of coffee, open a window and just get talking about a film or something that's happened to us recently. Most songs start with James playing some chords on the guitar and we just go from there.

What’s a typical day for you?

Studio. We might go to the cafe at the top of our road, but our studio is where we spend all of our time whether we are writing or recording, or just spending the day watching music videos and studying other artists.

Coffee or tea?

Tough one…

Antonio : Coffee

James : Both have a special place in my heart… I’d have to go with coffee though.

What are some of your goals for 2017?

Release loads of music and go on tour. We would love to go on tour! We'd love to sign a publishing deal too not really rushing to sign for records.

What makes you happy?

Music, Football, having a few beers and of course, FIFA!
