MARIA FORQUÉ | GOLDEN BOY PRESS INTERVIEW #363

May 16, 2017

Could you introduce yourself?

I'm Maria Forqué and I am a performance artist, musician/dj and actress.

What’s your life philosophy?  How do you try to apply that to your work?

I to do what I like/have to do, no more than that. I learned that recently. My philosophy is making each moment worth it and used the best and appropriate way possible. I was years trying to do what I was "meant" to do, ideas society, friends and parents tell you and you believe. Now, I just do what I want to do. Applied to my work would traduce in doing what I like/have to do in each moment without thinking in the next thing I have to do.

Could you tell us what you think makes you stand apart in the art industry?

I think the question up answers it. Is do what I like to do, with no rules.

How would you describe your art style?  Do you feel like it reflects you?

I would describe it as pataphisique, sexual, pure, conceptual, dadaist, spiritual, virtual, extreme. Yes, I feel it reflects some parts of me, the ones I want to reflect in my art I suppose.

What enticed you the most when it came to digital art?  What inspired you to use yourself as the focus in most of your work?

Well, digital art is amazing because you can create whatever you want only knowing how to use devices and programs, creating worlds quite freely. I love playing with myself as a virtual "entity".When I was small I basically was all day recording myself and drawing. I guess I like to express apart from creating, that's why I use myself. I also drew a lot of self portraits, both recording and drawing are ways to know and observe yourself, I guess I need that too.

What are your thoughts on the feedback you get on your work?  Do you aim to provoke a certain kind of response, what's the process?

Well sometimes my thoughts are amazing because what I receive is so accurate to what I feel and sometimes I didn't even know. Is like some people read me inside. I also "like" critics because I make myself aware of what I'm doing and maybe not realizing. Everyone is our mirror so I take each feedback as a part of me talking to myself, it makes sense. There are also certain pieces that without you waiting for it make a lot of people do interpretations of it or has thousands of views, other you think are amazing maybe don't, this is really funny. Really I aim to show what I like or what I feel I have to do it that moment, I'm open to feedback but  now I want to be more accurate in my work, explain myself better.

What are a few tips for other artists that might be reading this?

That whatever they do is amazing, they only have to keep doing what they feel and not what they are "meant" to do. When you realize doing what you really WANT is what works is amazing. No pressure, just one by one doing what you really want to do, and not doing what you really don't want to do. What you "really" want to do is always the correct, because if not, why would you want to do it?

If you had to choose any music album that captures the emotion of your work, what would it be and why?

Well, "Recycled Sounds" the first album of my music+art trio @beta_0project captures a lot of my emotions and as I am part of it it has a lot to do with "me". You can hear it on Spotify searching as beta_0<3 and on YouTube as BETACERO ICONOCORAZON. Its a trip album, 3 of the songs made with recycled sounds we loved, there's a lot of souls inside this album. That's how I feel too, with a million souls.

What's one thing that has to do with art that others might not know about you?

Well I think a lot of people think I'm only an internet artist and actually I've done a lot of physical art performance, dj sets, I do music and sing besides working as an actress. I think I could be an good example of multidisciplinar artist. I also edit video and draw.

Do you have any rituals you do before you start your creative process for a new project, to get your mind and energy in the right place?

My ritual is daily do some exercise, the one I feel I need that day, drinking water, having water on my skin, have my own territory of creation and doing things the best I can. I also have in mind words or sensations I repeat If I want a certain state. Example: If I want to feel love, I think only about the word love all the time. This is useful for performing or creating sometimes. Writing down exactly what I want and when( even if it varies) is necessary too. Putting everything, mind, body, soul and matter organized and in balance.

What’s a typical day for you?

There's no typical day for me, each one is very different.

Coffee or tea?

depends on time and mood

What are some of your goals for 2017?

Doing a film, a new song, an installation-video I really want to do and expose it in a museum I love. Djing in amazing places. Doing a performance in a good fashion show, MoMa Ps1 and museum of sex in nyc. Evolving with @beta_0project and my duo @_1por1_

What makes you happy?

Being faithful to myself.

Lastly, could you tell us about your Beta_0Project?

I would like to explain @beta_0project is my art and music trio formed by 3 girls. We do music, sing and make art. Everything has sense together, we try to extend a new message, the idea of consciousness change. If you change, the world changes. It's the individual change what changes the world. You can change what you see and feel be changing the thinking. Understanding of truth is the future.
