JACK CONMAN | GOLDEN BOY PRESS INTERVIEW #368

Could you introduce yourself?

I'm Jack Conman from Hull, UK, currently living in Manchester. I'm a solo artist and release through my own label, Axolotl Records

What’s your life philosophy? How do you try to apply that to your work?

Never just settle for something you don't like or enjoy, whether it be a job, a partner, a house, or anything. You can always make a change and have new scenery. And I think I apply that lyrically through a lot of my newer songs.

Could you tell us what you think makes you stand apart in the music industry?

I think my percussive guitar playing is what people latch onto most.

How would you describe your music style? Do you feel like it reflects you?

It's always changing slightly but the topic of the songs and what they stand for is always reasonably similar. Some of the songs can be quite angry and some of them can be quite romanticised which are generally neither of me as a person. But I think music allows you to tap into a realm of yourself which you haven't explored yet.

What are a few tips for other artists that might be reading this?

Buy your own recording equipment and self produce your own tracks. Studios are terrible for creativity and money loss.

Could you tell us about your recent track, "Greatly Hasty"? What's the story behind the work?

The songs about conflicting between what you want to do with your life and what other people want you to do. I wanted to escape from my home town and I was very fed up of being stuck with no money and nothing going on musically. It's also about the realisation that I was leaving a lot of my friends behind.

If you had to choose any music album that captures the emotion of your work, what would it be and why?

Probably frank oceans album, channel orange. I hope to create something similar on an emotional level at some point, but I think the yearning, lustful and empathetic vibe from the songs is something I hope to create in my own.

What's one thing that has nothing to do with music that others might not know about you?

I really love sharks, ever since I was a kid. Going to aquariums makes me feel ecstatic.

Do you have any rituals you do before you start your creative process for a new project, to get your mind and energy in the right place?

I actually do nothing. I think I gather energy by emotions I feel in every day life and I write a song depicting how I felt that day or that week or about something that happened or about something that I want to happen etc. So I don't control anything around me I think I just write depending on my mood or about something that's provoked my thoughts.

What’s a typical day for you?

At the moment, waking up and 10am, making a cup of tea, going to university, coming home and seeing my girlfriend, and then we usually get drunk together and go see some friends and generally speaking, I'm able to write something about the experience because we'll have a conversation which I remember or something will trigger me to wanna write the next day.

Coffee or tea?

Both, depends how tired I am

What are some of your goals for 2017?

To have 1,000,000 listens to one of my songs on Soundcloud.

To release a single every month for a year.

What makes you happy?

Being out my comfort zone and not staying in the same place for too long. And obviously, writing music.

Any closing comments

If you don't like the career path you're on, whether it be uni or a job or anything, don't be a slave, just quit it and do something else.
