O BOY! INTERVIEW: Great Good Fine OK Makes A Difference In The Synth-Pop Community

Have you ever wanted to relax with your clinking glass of iced tea while reminiscing about the good years, synth-pop playing in the background while you tap your foot to the beat? If so, you just found the perfect duo to accompany that moment, Great Good Fine OK!

In this interview we explore the inner workings of this synth-pop duo and how they're taking over the genre entirely. Based in Brooklyn, Great Good Fine OK, created by Luke Moellman and Jon Sandler, they know how to revive that retro sound we all know and love. They're not only a strong voice for music artists, but they really do make a difference in the music community that is undoubtedly one you can't miss, across all genres.

An excerpt from their official bio, just to give you an idea of their experience and who they've worked with:

"GGFO have performed shows supporting acts ranging from Tove Lo to X Ambassadors to Penguin Prison and have embarked on four major US tours with Betty Who, Joywave, Magic Man, Vacationer, and Panama Wedding, with four songs reaching #1 on Hype Machine and their single “Take It or Leave It” surpassing 15 million plays on Spotify."

Hope you enjoy the read and that iced tea!

Could you introduce yourself?

Hi! I’m Jon and my partner is Luke.

How did the two of you meet and decide to create Great Good Fine Ok? Tells us everything!

Luke and I met and became friends about 6 years ago when he was living around the corner from me in BK with my close friend and piano player. About 4 years ago we ran into each other on the street after not seeing each other for months and decided to write a song together. That night “You’re the One for Me” was created. We put a band together and started writing more songs and GGFO was born.

How do you feel synth-pop has evolved as a community over the last few years? Do you feel like there is more of a connection between the artists who create within this genre of music?

The music world is small, so especially artists within the same genre often become friendly. We tour together / collaborate, so in that sense, a connection forms. That said, most of the time while we are creating new music we keep to ourselves.

Could you tell us about your latest music video for your track, "Change"? What's the story?

The video is about two kids who grow up together and fall in love, but the boy’s destiny is to travel to space. She wants him to be happy, but doesn’t want anything to change. You can take the video to be very literal, or as a huge metaphor, and that’s why I love it. We all experience love and loss and everything in between.

What can you tell us about your forthcoming EP? We want the scoop!

Well…”Change” will be on the EP, and handful of other songs that we are extremely proud of. It will show a very full spectrum of what GGFO is capable of. That’s about all I can tell you for now! ;)

We've seen that you have over 1.4 Million Spotify streams just on your latest single which is quite impressive! How does it feel to have that many people listen to the work that you're passionate about, what runs through your mind?

It’s insane! We make music that we love that comes from our hearts, so we feel extremely lucky and humbled every time a song connects with people. The songs really do feel like our babies, so there is no better feeling than seeing one do well.

How was the performance at the Pinknic Festival? What's one moment that stood out to you?

It was so fun! It happened to be over 90 degrees both days we performed, so that was super intense. (Especially since I still wore 2 kimonos). What else…the second day Luke got stung by a bee on the palm of his hand 3 minutes before we started playing. So, that was weird.

Could you give us a hint about any upcoming projects that might be a little bit hush hush?

Honestly, we are planning lots of stuff right now, but nothing to report just yet. Excited about the new music, and can’t wait to get back on the road!

What makes you happy?

Dancing and ice cream
